Holiday gatherings mean tough family conversations about senior moves.
As we approach the holiday season there will be daughters, sons, granddaughters and grandsons, nieces, nephews, and life-long friends descending upon the family home to celebrate together with their loved ones.
In the midst of carving turkeys, piling whipped cream onto pumpkin pie, and sipping on holiday punch, it becomes evident that Mom and Dad aren’t doing very well. This reality evolves into family planning meetings and some much needed conversations around being able to maintain the family home safely.
The seed is planted. And depending upon the circumstances, the wheel is put into motion. Sometimes it moves slowly and other times it moves quickly. As a specialist in seniors housing it is critical that we be prepared to assist in facilitating those family conversations during this time when the urgency is high.
During the months of November and December, senior housing professionals may want to consider calling those in their circles of influence letting them know that they are there for them -- and prepared to assist.
If it’s been a while, now is definitely a good time to revisit your database and consider anyone who may be dealing with the following life circumstances and thereby in need of your services.
- Caring for senior adult parents who are struggling with remaining independent.
- Preparing to relocate or downsize due to changes in their family structure (i.e. last child is off to college, empty nesters, loss of a spouse, etc.)
- Traveling extensively to care for aging parents and who need a secondary property to facilitate this.
- Moved an elderly parent and need to liquidate property to free up funds for caregiving expenses.
- Have a neighbor or co-worker who is responsible for assisting a senior adult with downsizing.
If you are looking for a way to build deeper relationships with the people in your sphere of influence, allow yourself to enter into these types of conversations.
Be the gift to your people ... your clients and past clients, family, friends, acquaintances, and anyone else in your life.
Tis the season for enlightenment, candid conversations, and loving decisions.
Be there. Be available. Be bold. Be caring. Be the seed planter. Just be you.
